Swollen head baby: Roona Begum's incredible journey
A toddler whose head swelled to three times its natural size is undergoing a dramatic resurgence. Three-year-old Roona Begum hit headlines last year when she was rushed to hospital suffering from an extreme form of hydrocephalus - also known as water on the brain. Surgeons in New Delhi were able to reduce the size of her head from 37in to 23in but she was later discharged with little chance of survival. Yesterday (July 23) they were amazed to find that not only is Roona alive - but is well enough to even smile. She is still unable to walk because of the weight of her head but is able to crawl, eat and interact with her loving parents Abdul Rahman, 21, and Fatima Khatun, 23. They hope she will be well enough to attend school next year. In light of her continued recovery, doctors are considering another operation to further reduce the size of her head. However, her parents, having seen her brought back from the brink several times, are worried about the risks and are deciding whether to give their consent.
