Guinness World Record set for the world's biggest disco ball
Could this be the world’s biggest mirrorball? The organisers of Bestival on the Isle of Wight certainly hope so. Nile Rodgers of disco legends Chic laid down the challenge to break the record for the largest mirror ball ever built, and a representative of Guinness World Records has been called in to assess the new attempt. But size is only part of the record – the disco ball has to rotate in the air for 5 mins at a music event where people dance. Slowly it is hoisted 12 metres in the air, and a team of 6 wranglers start it spinning.

Lava explodes into the air as Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano erupts
Intrepid photographer Einar Gudmann returns to the scene of the Bardarbunga volcanic eruption in Iceland to capture this incredible footage. Following a series of earthquakes starting in mid August, the volcano has been erupting for over two weeks. This footage shows the extent of the lava stream, which is now at least 18km long. Authorities are keeping a careful eye on the amount of sulphur dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere as weather systems carry it away from the eruption site.

Giant anaconda captured after eating neighbour's dog
Maths teacher Sebastien Bascoules captured a massive 17ft anaconda which ate his friend’s dog in French Guiana. The 39-year-old old wrestled the huge serpent out of a river close to his friend’s house, blindfolded it and left it in his bathtub over night. With the help of his friends and young sons Sebastien then released the 175lb anaconda into a large river six miles away.
