Against The Tide - The Clipper Round The World: Setting Sail
Series 1 : Episode 1 on
Description:
The 09/10 Clipper Round The World race is unique as the only event that allows amateurs to compete in a sailing circumnavigation of the globe. Participants come from mixed nationalities, ages and walks of life; many haven’t even stepped on a boat before attempting this pinnacle of sailing endeavours. In this show we meet the varied characters preparing for their journey of a lifetime, including nurse Jo Jackson who at age 49 decided to throw off the shackles of everyday life and devote some time to herself, and Arthur Bowers, a leaflet processor at his local daily paper who confesses ‘I need to do something with my life before they put on the lid of the coffin’. But as they complete rigorous training for their epic challenge cracks begin to appear as the reality of sharing a cramped, stripped-down racing yacht with a bunch of strangers crashes home. Finally the elation of a spectacular race launch rapidly turns to overt anger as a contentious first race requires the organisers’ intervention to prevent anarchy spreading among the fleet.
